That reminds me a) Does my idiot roommate ex-roommate roommate again (Yes, Marius, I smelled your stinky stink teleporting ass this morning) need donations and b) I dunno who picked that lemon-scented stuff for the floors but, can we get another one? Because whatever that stuff was makes me want to stick Forge's whirry drill thing up my nose and remove the parts for smelling stuff.

Re: Come on, guys!
Date: 2006-10-03 06:30 pm (UTC)Besides, Ricky Martin may somehow have redeeming qualities somewhere. Thus, no comparison.

Date: 2006-10-03 07:03 pm (UTC)I don't want to hole up in some little enclave to be protected, I want to live my life! you need to get your ass out of your lab and maybe experience the world before you start creating your plan for world domination!
Re: Come on, guys!
Date: 2006-10-03 07:10 pm (UTC)And here's where you're wrong - developing a common culture does NOT mean isolation, or separation, or domination.
Denying that we ARE different is ignorance, just as much as the folks espousing the FoH beliefs. No one's talking about hiding out in a little enclave - if you'll recall, I'm pretty vocally opposed to the entire concept of reservations, ghettos, and other ethnoculturally-divided areas.
Yes, there are a lot of mutants who would prefer to just assimilate, blend in, pretend they're something they're not. The phrase "Uncle Tom" comes to mind when I think of those folks. They want to pretend they're the same, when all that amounts to is living a lie motivated by self-loathing.
But we are different. And to say that doesn't affect how we react to the world around us is both naive and ignorant. We share common experiences and perceptions related to our differences from the majority of humanity, and that in and of itself is a cultural touchstone for us, whether you choose to accept it or not.
Re: Come on, guys!
Date: 2006-10-03 07:14 pm (UTC)not an ethnic group. does not mean we aren't a group in general, but we are not that specific kind. not unless you come up with a way to create that common link - and without some sort of enclave or country of mutants or whatever, I don't think that's going to happen.
and for the record - I am not pretending, I am not blending in and I am not assimilating. I AM ME.
Re: Come on, guys!
Date: 2006-10-03 07:19 pm (UTC)Perhaps it's time to make the world realize that it's an ineffective and anachronistic division - and that to me is an admirable goal, one bigger than any type of social unity that's ever been accomplished in human history.
And I'm not suggesting you're trying to hide what you are or assimilate - you really can't, nor do I ever think you would. You're proud of who and what you are, and I respect that. You're out in the world, in a predominantly human college, unafraid to show what you are but also not using it to isolate yourself.
In all actuality, you're the perfect example of my entire point.

Sofia is neither Hispanic nor Latina, which may seem unnecessary to state, but I imagine she would be cross to be called either.
