That reminds me a) Does my idiot roommate ex-roommate roommate again (Yes, Marius, I smelled your stinky stink teleporting ass this morning) need donations and b) I dunno who picked that lemon-scented stuff for the floors but, can we get another one? Because whatever that stuff was makes me want to stick Forge's whirry drill thing up my nose and remove the parts for smelling stuff.

Ah, yes. Providing Rahne with some respite from the relentless marrow-sucking would indeed be the gentlemanly thing to do, wouldn't it. Cheers.

My apologies for the stench. Breathing nothing but filtered air tends to put simple things like disgusting odours out of one's mind.

I'll be down later today to get back on the donation schedule then.

As long as it's not lemon-scented, right now I'm happy.

Where in the heck do we keep aspirin in this stupid room? Do we have aspirin?

No rush. I'm attempting to cut back. There has been unhealthy binging of late.

Apparently I am many things, but to my knowledge none of them involve a fresh lemon-scent.

I can offer no suggestions as to the aspirin. The only analgesic currently accessible to me is the product of my palms' Pavlovian salivation. Which I suppose is an option if you have no further need to feel your face.

We should totally give Marius a break here!

Sure, he did some not-nice things, if what I hear is true, but that doesn't make him a BAD PERSON!

I find that borrowing a rock or even the wood from my desk makes headaches go away. But that wouldn't work very well for you.

I'm not sure Kyle's saying Marius is a bad person here, Mondo - there's that teenage bloke thing where insults can be like friendly nicknames, at least in places like England and Australia and the States.

As for not-nice things... like Forge said, those are rumours and it's not always a good idea to believe everything you hear whispered in the locker room. Marius is no more a bad person than the rest of you lot.

For instance, I am not related Enrique Iglesias or Ricky Martin. I do not know where those came from.

2). "she's into superstition, black cats and voodoo dolls"

3). "she's got a new addiction for every day and night"

4). "she'll take away your pain, like a bullet through the brain"

It is TOTALLY YOU!!!

Okay, I might not be Latino - but even I know that Spanish and Puerto Rican are immensely different. To get an idea of how different, go tell Rahne or Terry that Irish and Scottish are basically "all just British, really".

Besides, Ricky Martin may somehow have redeeming qualities somewhere. Thus, no comparison.

of course spanish is different from puerto rican - which is wht I said they were both "latino" not both "hispanic". but they both fit under a very broad catagory.

and I dunno about ricky having any redeeming qualities, he was in Menudo!

And technically you're still wrong, as Manuel is not Latino. He's European. Latino is a term specific to the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas. Trust me, grow up in a community that's 1/3rd Spanish-speaking, and you learn to tell the differences really quickly.

except that we're not an ehtnicity.

eth‧nic  /ˈɛθnɪk/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[eth-nik] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective
1. pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.
2. referring to the origin, classification, characteristics, etc., of such groups.
3. being a member of an ethnic group, esp. of a group that is a minority within a larger society: ethnic Chinese in San Francisco.
4. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of members of such a group.
5. belonging to or deriving from the cultural, racial, religious, or linguistic traditions of a people or country: ethnic dances.
6. Obsolete. pagan; heathen.

none of us have a common cultural, racial, religious or linguistic background. genetics don't make a group - as the balkanization of europe showed.

I thought we were working to live WITH humans - not separate ourselves more! I can't think of a single time that separating a group from society did any good other than make them easy scapegoats for bigotry and hatred!

I don't want to hole up in some little enclave to be protected, I want to live my life! you need to get your ass out of your lab and maybe experience the world before you start creating your plan for world domination!

Re: Come on, guys!

No, I really don't.

And here's where you're wrong - developing a common culture does NOT mean isolation, or separation, or domination.

Denying that we ARE different is ignorance, just as much as the folks espousing the FoH beliefs. No one's talking about hiding out in a little enclave - if you'll recall, I'm pretty vocally opposed to the entire concept of reservations, ghettos, and other ethnoculturally-divided areas.

Yes, there are a lot of mutants who would prefer to just assimilate, blend in, pretend they're something they're not. The phrase "Uncle Tom" comes to mind when I think of those folks. They want to pretend they're the same, when all that amounts to is living a lie motivated by self-loathing.

But we are different. And to say that doesn't affect how we react to the world around us is both naive and ignorant. We share common experiences and perceptions related to our differences from the majority of humanity, and that in and of itself is a cultural touchstone for us, whether you choose to accept it or not.

and with absolutely nothing in common - we have no culture. no language, no beliefs, no religion, nothing.

not an ethnic group. does not mean we aren't a group in general, but we are not that specific kind. not unless you come up with a way to create that common link - and without some sort of enclave or country of mutants or whatever, I don't think that's going to happen.

and for the record - I am not pretending, I am not blending in and I am not assimilating. I AM ME.

If you can't change the world, you change the word. "Ethnic" used to mean "anyone not Greek". It carried the connotations of "heathen" for centuries until people decided it meant something else.

Perhaps it's time to make the world realize that it's an ineffective and anachronistic division - and that to me is an admirable goal, one bigger than any type of social unity that's ever been accomplished in human history.

And I'm not suggesting you're trying to hide what you are or assimilate - you really can't, nor do I ever think you would. You're proud of who and what you are, and I respect that. You're out in the world, in a predominantly human college, unafraid to show what you are but also not using it to isolate yourself.

In all actuality, you're the perfect example of my entire point.

Manuel certainly harped on it enough that I remember. Manuel is Hispanic - that is, Spanish-speaking, but not Latino, since he is from Spain.

Angelo is both Hispanic and Latino, as he speaks Spanish natively and he and his family are from Latin America.

Sofia is neither Hispanic nor Latina, which may seem unnecessary to state, but I imagine she would be cross to be called either.
